Going On Holiday With Mobility Problems
If you’re asked to go on holiday with friends or family and your mobility isn’t quite what it used to be then you may be inclined to say no to their offer. Most of us want to avoid being a burden on our families and would hate to curtail their activites while on a break. But this doesn’t need to be the case.
Before you say no to the offer you may want to consider a couple of options that might be helpful. One is using a folding mobility scooter that will fit in the boot of a car. That way you can keep up with everyone. You can hire one for when you’re away without having to go to the expense of buying one outright.
If you opt for a scooter you need to be able to recharge the batteries between excursions out. Although easy to operate you will need to have a little practise before you set off on the streets.
Of course a mobility scooter won’t suit everyone so another option is a wheelchair. These days you can get ones that fold up so they are easy to transport in a car. We all have good days and bad days and on a good day you can always leave the wheelchair in the car. When you’ve got a long day planned then you’ll know that you’ll need to take the wheelchair with you. Even if you end up not being pushed about in the wheelchair on a particular day it is still handy to have around as it makes for a convenient seat.
These lightweight wheelchairs aren’t particularly expensive so might like to consider also getting a portable wheelchair ramp to get you over small obstacles and thresholds. You might also want to purchase a wheelchair pad to make sitting in the seat a little more comfortable.
Whether using a mobility scooter or wheelchair, don’t leave your walking stick behind because it will maximise your ability to get around in allsorts of places. So don’t say no straight away, think about your options and how much you’d enjoy spending time with your family before you make your decision.
